Supermajority fight club – Washington Times.

Democrats are a party of contrasts. You have representatives of very conservative minorities like Hispanics in the same party as very liberal representatives like homosexuals. Were it not for both being minorities they would be at each others throats (see the recent gay marriage referendum voted down by Hispanics in California). You can make many comparisons very much like that throughout the Democratic constituencies… and thus, when they come to power these natural fault lines come to surface as each constituency attempts to overshadow their compatriots.

  1. But these fault lines never result in a break. I agree with your overall premise but in the big picture I don’t see how it matters. I’ve heard for years about how the Democrat Party is a mismatch of various interest groups that would otherwise not stand on the same side or vote with the bandwagon, but whatever is holding them together seems pretty strong. I’m tempted to say it’s the Republicans’ fault for their ineffective marketing and their failure to pick apart the Democrats’ various groups, but I don’t think that’s the case. If the divisions were really strong, they would turn on each other on their own.

While the Democrats may have more various groups, when push comes to shove they always stand together, with the exception of the so called blue dog democrats. The Republicans on the other hand, have fewer groups of the divisions between the groups cause far greater damage as a whole. If the religious, libertarian, or blue-blood factions of the Republican Party gets ticked off, they don’t vote, or vote third party, or vote for the Democrats. These fault lines cause damage and because of that, a Republican candidate must walk a tightrope that is more difficult than any a Democrat candidate must walk.

  2. The thing that is holding all of the factions of the Democratic Party together into one party is the wide spread belief that the Republican Party is “racist”. And it does not look like that is going to change any time soon because most high profile Republicans don’t seem to give a damn if anything they say or do is interpreted as racist. High profile Republicans seem to have the attitude that they know they are not racist, so why in the hell should they jump through hoops to try to prove they are not racist? I’ll tell you why. Because accurate or not, half the country thinks you are racist. Get a clue or watch the Democratic Party continue to think it has a reason to stay together, “to fight the evil racism of the Republican Party.”
