It took me a long time to figure out twitter. I believe it is basically a main stream media creation.
It takes the news feed concept from facebook, but instead of being default private like facebook, it is default public. Members are limited to 140 characters per message and anybody can search every member’s public comments, even if they don’t have a membership.
This allows corporations and the main stream media (and us) to easily browse thousands of bite size opinions which explain what people are thinking literally right this minute about any topic that is searched for. TV Shows can easily browse comments in real time while the show is still in progress.
People with the guts to comment at all, tend to want to write a whole email, but twitter forces 140 characters or less. When twitter first started it was getting mediocre reviews, but this was before the data mining community figured out how much of a time saver it is to be able to browse one line opinions from thousands of people in real time. As soon as the main stream media figured this out, they started promoting twitter on a daily basis on all of their shows, and the rest is history.
